WHEN THE OIL THREATENS FLORIDA (40 photos)
By declaring a state of emergency, Florida can receive federal assistance to cope with a potential disaster. With 800,000 gallons of oil leaking every day from the oil well dug by the platform that sank April 22, the disaster could exceed in magnitude than the Exxon Valdez spill, the worst in American history, in 1989 off Alaska. The people of Florida are entitled to ask some questions and be concerned for their ecological heritage.
